Substance Abuse Evaluation & Education Requirements & Recommendations
After a DUI arrest:
When police draw blood or take a breath sample by invoking Admin per Se based on suspicion of DUI, Arizona drivers face either a 90-day or a 1-year suspension of their driving privilege.
After a DUI arrest, in order to get your license back, even if you later beat the charges, you must complete a substance abuse evaluation at an approved provider.
Where can the evaluation be completed?
The Arizona Department of Transportation provides a full list of providers available for substance abuse evaluations. For this full list, see their website.
Who does AJB Law Firm recommend?
We recommend Cornerstone Healing Center. Cornerstone is located in Scottsdale, but services customers throughout the state. The recommendation stems for the convenience and flexibility. Cornerstone does the substance abuse evaluation by phone. If treatment is recommended, those hours can be completed self-paced online.
Other providers have online options, but many times require logging in at a certain time. Others require in-person meetings. While Cornerstone may be more expensive than other locations, the convenience is worth it.
You can learn more about how to work with Cornerstone here.
After the evaluation, do I need to do anything else to reinstate my license?
After you have completed your screening, you will still need to pay a reinstatement fee at the Arizona MVD or online at https://azmvdnow.gov/home. If you are eligible for an interlock during the suspension period, installation would also be required.
After the evaluation, is completing the recommended treatment required?
While MVD does not require you to complete the recommended classes, if you are convicted of a DUI, you will be required to complete the hours recommended by the evaluation. Your substance abuse evaluation will determine whether you need to complete Level I or Level II counseling.
